Illegal fireworks left at Newport Beach fire station

Newport Beach firefighters say they disposed of more than 100 potentially dangerous fireworks that were left at one of their stations Tuesday morning.

Officials said a man dropped them off behind the Lido Station at 475 32nd St. around 11 a.m. Included were sparklers, 30 improvised firecrackers, 20 Mexican salutes — which are designed to make a loud noise — and 60 to 100 triangle-fold firecrackers, a fire official said.

“The explosive power of the latter three items is particularly dangerous,” Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said in a news release.

Fire officials called the Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad to collect the items for disposal, Manzella said.

All fireworks are illegal in Newport Beach.

“If you have explosives or fireworks in your home, they may be safely surrendered at a Newport Beach … fire station,” Manzella said. “Items should not be left at a Fire Department facility without the knowledge and approval of Fire Department staff.”
