Car rolls onto blind pedestrian after collision

A compact car rolled over onto a 46-year-old blind pedestrian after a collision Wednesday at Santa Ana Avenue and East 17th Street in Costa Mesa, police said.

The blind man, an Irvine resident, was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

About 5:30 p.m. police responded to a collision after a Toyota Sequoia SUV turned left in front of a Honda Civic, causing the car to roll over onto the pedestrian, who was standing at the southwest corner, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Both drivers had a green light, police said.

The Sequoia’s driver, James Dickens, 76, of Corona, complained of pain to his left wrist and was taken to Hoag Hospital, according to police.

The Civic’s driver, Kaitlyn Wetzel, 21, of Costa Mesa, complained of pain to her right knee and was released at the scene, police said.
