Man arrested across the street from bank he’s suspected of robbing

Police arrested a Gardena man Wednesday at an apartment complex just across the street from an Irvine bank he’s suspected of robbing a day earlier.

Authorities allege Michael Ladon Sheppard, 53, walked into a Union Bank at 5311 University Drive and demanded cash from a teller Tuesday morning. He was apparently unarmed and fled on foot, police said.

FBI agents and Irvine police responded to the bank and took a description of the suspect who hadn’t yet been identified.

Wednesday morning, Irvine police Sgt. Shaheen Jahangard was patrolling the nearby Parkwood Apartments when he saw a man matching the bank robber’s description standing outside one of the complex’s units, authorities said.

Jahangard contacted Sheppard, discovered he had money stolen the day before and arrested him on the spot, police said.

Sheppard is now in Orange County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail, according to sheriff’s department records.
