Police warn of possible home repair scam

Share

Two men have been going door-to-door in Newport Beach this week, possibly trying to scam homeowners into paying for unneeded roof repairs, according to police.

Thursday, two men knocked on the door of a home in the 100 block of Liberty and said they had seen a “bubble” on the resident’s roof, police said in a news release.

After being allowed inside, the men inspected the home and said they found evidence of the leak and pointed out water on top of the hot-water heater.

The men then offered to fix the supposed leak for about $4,000, but the resident declined, police said.

Friday, Newport Beach police got a report about a similar incident.

Again, two men offered to check a roof for leaks and found water on top of the hot-water heater.

The second resident told the alleged scammers that he’d have to consult his son before letting them fix anything, and they left before the resident’s son arrived.

Police described both men as white with brown hair and brown eyes. One was in his 20s, wearing navy blue pants and a navy blue shirt, and the other was in his 50s wearing Bermuda shorts and a white T-shirt, police said.

Authorities asked that anyone who sees the men or is targeted by their scam call Newport police at (949) 644-3717.
