Driver dies after crashing into Costa Mesa bus bench

A 26-year-old man who was thrown from his car after it crashed into a concrete bus bench in Costa Mesa early Friday has died, authorities confirmed Monday.

Randy Mountford, 26, of Irvine was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.

Police suspect Mountford was intoxicated when he was speeding east on Adams Avenue shortly after 3:30 a.m. Friday. He lost control of his 2000 Acura Integra and the car slammed into a bus bench on the north side of the street, police said.

The crash threw Mountford from the car, and he broke his back and neck and sustained major head trauma, police said.

No other vehicles were involved. Costa Mesa police are asking that witnesses contact traffic investigator Darren Wood at (714) 754-5264.
