A 26-year-old Costa Mesa resident was in critical condition after losing control of his car and crashing into a concrete bus bench early Friday, according to police.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a collision near Adams Avenue and Mesa Verde Drive East.
Police said the driver was speeding east on Adams Avenue when he lost control of his 2000 Acura Integra and slammed into the bus bench on the north side of the street. He was ejected from the vehicle onto a business property in the 1600 block of Adams Avenue, police added.
Authorities believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
He was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of injuries including a broken neck and back and major head trauma, police said.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which is under investigation. Costa Mesa police are asking witnesses to contact traffic investigator Darren Wood at (714) 754-5264.
