The Newport-Mesa Unified School District has selected a new principal for Rea Elementary School, pending final approval from the school board.

Administrators selected Kalim Rayburn, director of alumni engagement at USC, for the campus’ top job, the district announced Friday.

Rayburn was previously assistant head of school at a private school in Long Beach and program director for the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, according to her USC biography.

Newport-Mesa’s announcement also noted Rayburn is bilingual, something requested by parents at Rea where 85% of students are learning English.

At the elementary school Tuesday, parents, teachers and other stakeholders told school officials what they wanted in a new leader.

“Based on the input received from the Rea school community, we believe Dr. Rayburn is an exceptional match,” Newport-Mesa spokeswoman Laura Boss wrote in the announcement.

School officials said they would pass on comments from the meeting to the new principal.

The school board is expected to formally approve Rayburn’s selection at its board meeting Tuesday.
