Around Town: Bartending contest raises $1,700 for reading nonprofit
A bartending competition called “Cheers for Literacy” raised more than $1,700 on June 10 for The Literacy Project, a Corona del Mar-based nonprofit that helps struggling readers throughout Southern California.
The event at 3-Thirty-3 Waterfront restaurant in Newport Beach featured guest bartenders Katie Smith, a philanthropist, and Kimberly Vig of The Literacy Project competing against Al Freeman of Diamond Productions and Daily Pilot sports editor Steve Virgen to see which team could gather the most tip donations.

Donated dresses sought for Marine Ball
The city of Costa Mesa and its Military Affairs Team are looking for donations of new or lightly used prom dresses, ball gowns, cocktail dresses and accessories for spouses of members of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Costa Mesa’s “adopted” Marine unit.
The dresses will be worn at the annual Marine Ball in October.
Donated items can be dropped off in the footlocker in the lobby of City Hall, 77 Fair Drive, through Aug. 1.

‘The Lego Movie’ to be screened in park
The community is invited to a free screening of “The Lego Movie,” sponsored by GateHouse Properties, on Wednesday night in Balearic Park, 1975 Balearic Drive, Costa Mesa.
The event also will feature food trucks.
The movie will begin at about 8:15 p.m. Parking will be available at Balearic and Estancia parks.

Costa Mesa’s CMTV wins five awards
Costa Mesa’s public-access channel, CMTV, was honored recently with five awards from the Southern California and Nevada chapter of the National Assn. of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors at the 19th annual STAR Awards.
CMTV earned its first-place award in the magazine show category for “The Community Report,” the channel’s longest-running show.
CMTV took second place in the social-media category and third place in the categories of municipal channel promo, talk show and overall excellence in government programming.
The channel has received 15 first-place awards since 1997.

South County Outreach seeks volunteers
Irvine-based South County Outreach is looking for regular weekly volunteers to help in its food pantry, thrift store, computer lab and office.
The group says two key areas of need are client-care workers to make phone calls to help people seeking assistance and volunteers to sort donations to the thrift store, Upscale Resale in Laguna Hills.
It also is seeking corporate groups, clubs and service organizations to volunteer in the food pantry or conduct food drives. People also are needed to staff booths at community events, according to a news release.
