Adrienne Brandes, a Newport Beach luxury real estate agent, this week presented four students at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts with scholarships to complete their senior film studies, which will cost $30,000 to $60,000.

The presentation was at the Women of Chapman’s annual luncheon at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach.

The scholarship money is from the Women of Chapman Endowed Filmmaker Fund, which Brandes started when she was president of Women of Chapman four years ago. The group raised $1 million for the fund, and Brandes has pledged an additional $1 million of her own money, according to a news release.

Edison urges careful use of metallic balloons

Celebration time is here with Father’s Day, graduations, weddings and other occasions, and Southern California Edison is urging revelers to be careful if metallic balloons are part of the festivities.

Power outages caused by loose metallic balloons are at an all-time high, the utility said, and it advises users to keep them weighted outdoors, as required by California law.

As an example of the potential danger, the company noted that a fire last year at the Port Restaurant and Bar in Corona del Mar started when a floating metallic balloon hit nearby power lines. The restaurant and 2,990 other Edison customers in the area lost power.

Edison said it is on a record pace this year for balloon-related outages, with 390 before June, which it said is usually the worst month because of all the celebrations. The most for an entire year is 714 in 2012, the company said.
