Boys win breakfast with Chief Gazsi

Costa Mesa’s police chief walked into a doughnut shop Thursday morning, but the cliche was for a good cause.

Chowing down on some sweet confections with Chief Tom Gazsi was the prize for a fundraising raffle at St. Joachim Catholic School in Costa Mesa’s Eastside neighborhood.

About 9:30 a.m., Gazsi met first-grader James Palazzo and his brother, seventh-grader Luke Palazzo, at St. Joachim and took them to Sidecar Doughnuts on 17th Street. There he treated them to breakfast.

Gazsi attended St. Joachim as a kid.

He reminisced about walking or riding his bike from his family home in Costa Mesa to get to catechism classes.

“Having grown up at St. Joachim, it was wonderful to come back and spend time with this family,” Gazsi said.
