Around Town: Shelby Cobra club to present classic cars in Costa Mesa

The Cobra Owners Club of America Orange County will present its classic-car show, the Concours De Nice, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Park Mall outside the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel in Costa Mesa.

The show will feature more than 75 original Shelby Cobras, Shelby Daytona Coupes, Shelby GT350 and GT500 Mustangs, along with many competition cars and early- and late-model Mustangs.

The grand marshal will be former Shelby Cobra, Daytona Coupe and Shelby American FIA world championship race driver Allen Grant.

Health and Human Services regional director to speak at Great Park

Melissa Stafford Jones, Region IX director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be at the Great Park in Irvine at 11 a.m. Sunday for a Clinic in the Park “Health Chat” on free preventive health services available to families under the Affordable Care Act.

Region IX includes California, Nevada, Arizona, Guam and the Pacific islands. Before her appointment to the Department of Health and Human Services, Stafford Jones was president and chief executive of the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems.

Town hall to focus on St. James church, city budget

Newport Beach Mayor Pro Tem Diane Dixon will present a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the former City Hall at 3300 Newport Blvd., on the Balboa Peninsula.

The sale of the St. James the Great Episcopal Church property will be discussed, along with the city budget and public safety issues on the peninsula.

TV actor to join rappelling fundraiser against drug addiction

More than 60 people, including Misha Collins, star of the CW television series “Supernatural,” will rappel down the face of the 17-story Irvine Marriott hotel on Monday to help raise funds for Shatterproof, a national organization that promotes prevention, treatment and recovery of alcohol and drug addiction among children and young adults.

Shatterproof founder Gary Mendell lost his son Brian to addiction at age 25 in 2011.

Monday’s event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will begin with remarks from Irvine Mayor Steven Choi. Collins is scheduled to rappel at 3 p.m.

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $1,000.

The event is one of more than 20 in the 2015 Shatterproof Challenge Rappelling Series in cities across the United States.

Costa Mesa Fire Department gets grant

The Costa Mesa Fire Department is getting a $9,857 grant from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. and the Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. insurance brokerage. The funds will be used to buy communication headsets for two reserve firefighting trucks.

The headsets enable firefighters to communicate while sirens are sounding.

“Communication is a key component for firefighter safety while responding to emergencies,” said Battalion Chief Kevin Diamond. “This will allow our department to operate more safely and efficiently when we respond on our reserve fire apparatus.”

City and fire officials, firefighters and executives from Arthur J. Gallagher and Fireman’s Fund will gather for the grant presentation at 10 a.m. Monday at the Fire Department, 2450 Vanguard Way.

CdM meeting to discuss water conservation, group homes

The Corona del Mar Residents Association board of directors will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Matt Cosylion and Cassie Palmer from the Newport Beach code enforcement division will discuss water conservation measures and group homes in Corona del Mar.

Irvine schools foundation golf tournament raises $125,000

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation hosted 152 golfers at its Tee It Up for Education golf tournament on June 4 at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine, raising more than $125,000 to support educational pursuits.

Sports 1 Marketing and the Crescent Moon Foundation, Irvine-based organizations led by former National Football League quarterback Warren Moon, helped the schools foundation draw Moon and other former NFL players Vencie Glenn, Chris Hale and Christian Okoye for the tournament.

“With Warren and other athletes able to participate, we were able to give golfers a unique experience and the chance to interact with some of the sports stars kids look up to as role models,” Neda Eaton, president and chief executive of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, said in a statement.
