405 closure not expected to hamper fair

A planned closure of the 405 Freeway this summer is not expected to affect the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, officials say.

As part of the $277-million West County Connectors project by the California Department of Transportation and the Orange County Transportation Authority, the southbound 405 will be closed for about 20 hours from the end of the 605 Freeway near Rossmoor to the Valley View Street/Bolsa Chica Road exits around Westminster and Garden Grove.

The closure date is still to be determined. The fair runs from July 12 to Aug. 11.

The closure will allow crews to demolish the connector bridge from the southbound 405 to the eastbound 22 Freeway. Its replacement is due to be completed by then.

Officials said the 20-hour closure would begin at 9 p.m. on a Saturday and last through 5 p.m. Sunday.

OCTA spokesman Joel Zlotnik said the project will improve traffic flow by directly connecting carpool lanes on the 405, 605 and 22. It will also add a second carpool lane on the 405 between the 22 and 605.
