An 8-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he was pulled from a community pool in Irvine, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The boy was participating in swimming lessons at a pool near San Marino and Paseo Westpark around 4:50 p.m. Monday when someone noticed him face-down in the water, fire Capt. Shane Sherwood said.

Bystanders performed rescue breathing techniques on the unconscious boy, who eventually coughed up water, Sherwood said.
