Around Town: Catholic school to bid farewell to principal of 40-plus years

St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Costa Mesa invites the public to a farewell dinner June 19 for Sister Mary Vianney, who is retiring after 53 years with the school, more than 40 as its principal. She plans to return to her native Ireland.

The event will begin with Mass at 5:30 p.m. at the school, 1021 Baker St.

Reservations are required for the dinner that follows and may be made through Friday at sjbschool.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/FarewelltoSisterVianney. The price is $40 per person.

Girls Inc. of O.C. fundraising dinner is Friday

Girls Inc. of Orange County, a Costa Mesa-based nonprofit that aims to inspire girls through programs focused on science, technology, engineering, math, financial literacy, sound body image, healthy relationships and college and career readiness, will hold its annual “My Bold Future” fundraising dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Kia Motors America, 111 Peters Canyon Road, Irvine.

The event will recognize Girls Inc. of Orange County’s 2015 scholarship recipients while providing guests a three-course meal, entertainment and silent and live auctions. This year, more than $130,000 in scholarships have been awarded to help Girls Inc. participants and alumnae pursue higher education.

Pretend City Children’s Museum hosts Korean culture exhibit

Pretend City Children’s Museum in Irvine is celebrating Korean culture with “Heart and Seoul: Growing Up in Korea,” an exhibit that opened Tuesday and runs through Sept. 7.

The show, part of the Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit Series, is visiting Irvine as the first stop on an eight-city tour lasting four years.

The exhibit is broken into eight areas:

• Korea Plaza: “Hang out” with Korean children and “text” them questions about what life is like in Seoul, South Korea. See famous and historical sites on an interactive touch table.

• Korea K-Pop Stars Studio: Take the stage and “perform” with Korean pop stars in front of a 75-inch TV screen.

• Animation Studio: Check out a stop-motion animation station and draw an animated story.

• Taekwondo Studio: Match your moves with Korean children who are experts in this martial art.

• Restaurant: Dine in an authentic Korean restaurant or take on the role of restaurant owner.

• Apartment: Experience preparations, games and customs of Lunar New Year, try on a hanbok and learn to do the traditional bow, play yut nori by throwing sticks and moving tokens around a game board and more.

• Classroom: Learn how to speak and write Hangul, listen to folk tales and play traditional drums.

• Hanok Guest House: Place names of loved ones who have passed on the jesa table and bow in their honor.
