Memorial Day fun on the agenda

Newport-Mesa residents have a variety of options to choose from for their Memorial Day celebrations Monday.

Here is what is planned in Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Note the public services that won’t be available on the holiday.

Costa Mesa

• The Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Park & Mortuary and Costa Mesa Historical Society present their 59th annual Memorial Day ceremony. The event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature music, an honorary wreath laying, vintage military vehicles, a rifle salute, a noon flyby and free hot dogs.

Former Orange County Supt. of Schools William M. Habermehl is the keynote speaker.

The park is at 1625 Gisler Ave. For more information, call (714) 540-5554.

• The offices at City Hall, the Costa Mesa Sanitary District and Mesa Water District will be closed. Because of the closure, sanitary district officials said the normally scheduled trash service will be delayed by a day.

Newport Beach

•The 55th annual Memorial Day ceremony at Pacific View Memorial Park & Mortuary begins at 11 a.m. Monday at the park, 3500 Pacific View Drive, Corona del Mar. The event is open to the public.

•The American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 on the Balboa Peninsula will have a ceremony from 1 to 5 p.m. The event is open only to members and their guests.

•The Newport Beach Civic Center and city libraries will be closed Monday. There will be no trash collection or street sweeping. Collection the remainder of the week will take place one day later than usual. Monday’s Aviation Committee meeting is also canceled.

Laguna Beach

•Assemblyman Allan Mansoor (R-Costa Mesa) is the keynote speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony at Heisler Park, 375 Cliff Drive. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. sharp and is presented by the American Legion Post 222 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5868. Music begins at 10:30 a.m.

Organizers are urging attendees to come early because seating is limited. Those bringing floral arrangements are asked to make sure the organization’s name is attached and to have the arrangements in place by 10:30.
