Irvine Valley College handed out funds to 356 students during its 29th annual scholarship awards ceremony last week.

The college distributed about $201,400 in the form of 477 scholarships, according to a news release.

In 2011, the college awarded $157,000 to 197 students, the release stated.

“This is an 81% increase in the number of students and just over a 28% increase in the amount of dollars distributed to deserving students,” IVC President Glenn Roquemore said in the release.

Of the hundreds of scholarships awarded during the ceremony, 41 were a result of the completion of the Osher campaign. Between 2008 and 2011, all 112 of the state’s community colleges were challenged by the Bernard Osher Foundation to raise money on the promise that it would be matched dollar for dollar.

As a result of the campaign, IVC created an endowment that annually guarantees 41 scholarships valued at $1,000 each.
