Wi-Fi service expands in harbor

Boaters in Newport Harbor will now be able to more easily surf the web from the water, thanks to an expanded Wi-Fi service.

Temecula-based Southern California Telephone and Energy said in a news release earlier this month that it “expanded its footprint” in the harbor, making Wi-Fi available to more than 9,000 boaters and businesses through a privately held network.

Executives from the company did not respond to repeated requests for comment on how much the service will cost harbor denizens, where specifically the service will be accessible or how users can connect to the network.

However, users will be able to connect to a network called “Harbour Hotspot” for $3.99 per day, $5.99 per week or $19.99 per month payable by credit card, the Orange County Register reported.

Newport Beach Harbor Commissioner Doug West said in a phone message that he hadn’t heard much about the new Wi-Fi network.

Still, he said, “it’s certainly something that’s been needed for a while.”

“There’s been some marginal service,” he said. “But a significant upgrade would be welcome.”
