Shots fired in apparent road-rage incident in Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa police are looking for a man who shot at a car during a bout of road rage early Friday.

The incident started around 1:45 a.m. on 17th Street, when the victim’s car stopped at a red light behind a black Honda waiting to turn left onto Superior Avenue, police Lt. Ed Everett said.

When the light turned green, the Honda didn’t move, so the driver behind flashed his headlights, Everett said.

After both cars turned onto Superior, they stopped at another red light, where the Honda’s driver fired a handgun at the victim’s right-side fender and drove off, according to police.

The bullet ended up lodged in the battery, Everett said.

Nobody was hurt in the exchange, according to police.

Officials described the gunman as white and in his 20s or 30s. The Honda had two doors and was possibly a Civic made after 2008, police said.
