Costa Mesa to improve roads near JWA

Costa Mesa will temporarily close roads near John Wayne Airport in June as part of a $5.9-million project to improve streets and sidewalks.

The city will hold two public meetings June 5 to inform the public about the construction, which will include repaving all roads on the airport’s west side, bounded by the 55 and 405 freeways, the airport and Masters Circle, according to a news release from the city.

Work is expected to continue through November.

Streets and sidewalks are in “immediate need of improvement,” Public Works Director Ernesto Munoz said in the release.

Funding will come from three sources: Measure M2 and gas taxes and a Proposition 1B (State-Local Partnership Program) grant.

Measure M2 is a continuation of transportation improvements stemming from a half-cent sales tax Orange County voters first approved in 1990, according to the Orange County Transportation Authority’s website.

California voters approved Proposition 1B, also known as the Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality and Port Security Bond Act, in 2006, the state’s Department of Transportation website said.

The meetings will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 5 in City Council Chambers, 77 Fair Drive.
