Around Town: Balboa Island Artwalk to feature 90 artists Sunday

Local artists will take over the South Bayfront Promenade of Balboa Island on Sunday for the area’s annual Artwalk.

The outdoor fine-art show, which is in its 21st year, will feature 90 artists showing paintings, fine jewelry, blown glass, sculptures and photography. The mile-long display will be exhibited from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Musicians Gary Gould, the Retros, Jim Roberts, Don Ross & Rose and the Rick Sherman Duo will perform during the event.

Drones featured at fairgrounds expo this weekend

The 13th annual RCX Radio Control and Hobby Expo will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

The expo will feature information about drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as associated gear for them. Visitors also can try radio-controlled helicopters, planes, race cars and other devices.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults; children younger than 12 get in free.

Plein air art exhibit, sale set in Costa Mesa

The Southern California Plein Air Painters Assn. will present an opening reception Saturday of an art exhibit and sale featuring 60 works by local artists depicting scenes from around the state, nation and world.

The public artists reception will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Randy Higbee Gallery at 102 Kalmus Drive in Costa Mesa. The sale will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the gallery.

Stem Cell Treatment Center provides free seminars

The Irvine Stem Cell Treatment Center will offer free public seminars on the use of adult stem cells for degenerative and inflammatory conditions..

Seminars by Dr. Thomas Gionis, surgeon-in-chief, will take place at noon Sunday at the Crossroads Corporate Centre, 3500 Barranca Pkwy., Irvine; 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 3500 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena; and noon May 31 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 6333 Bristol Pkwy., Culver City.

Mariners Christian hires new head of school

Mariners Christian School in Costa Mesa has named Troy Moore, a former elementary school principal in North Carolina, as its new head of school.

Moore, hired after a nationwide search, will start at Mariners Christian on July 1, the school said.

He most recently was principal of Hawk Ridge Elementary School in Charlotte, N.C. That school was ranked No. 9 among the nation’s elementary schools by thebestschools.org and received the North Carolina Honor School of Excellence award for five consecutive years, according to a news release from Mariners Christian.

Moore graduated from Seaford Christian Academy in Delaware and earned a bachelor of science degree in teacher licensure from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and a master’s in school administration from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Troy as our new head of school,” Andrew Accardy, chairman of the board at Mariners Christian, said in a statement. “His personal Christian commitment plus his rigorous training in education make him a great fit for our administrative team, faculty and school community.”

Mariners Christian School has about 680 kindergarten through eighth-grade students from Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine and nearby cities.

Nominations sought for Innovation in Education Awards

Project Tomorrow, a national educational nonprofit based in Irvine, is seeking nominations for its annual Innovation in Education Awards, which honor school programs, educators and students for innovative use of science, math and technology in the classroom and community.

Nomination forms are available at https://www.tomorrow.org/programs/innovationawards.html and will be accepted through May.

Winners will get $1,000 to $1,500. The awards will be presented at the High-Tech Innovation Awards dinner reception on Oct. 8 at the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel in Costa Mesa.
