A Costa Mesa man fell asleep while driving and crashed into the front wall of an Albertsons supermarket over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

Costa Mesa police Lt. Greg Scott said Alan Edward Roberts, 48, was asleep when he rammed his car into the side of the Albertsons at 2300 Harbor Blvd. just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

Police determined that Roberts was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Scott said.

No one was injured, but the car left a hole in the front of the building. The hole has since been boarded up, police said.

Roberts had an outstanding warrant for an unpaid ticket. He was arrested and held at the Costa Mesa Police Department Jail. His bail was set at $500, Scott said.

The cost of damage to the building has not been determined.
