The Costa Mesa Library Foundation named Woodland Elementary teacher Rebecca Olsen as the winner of the My Favorite Teacher award during an awards breakfast Friday.

This is the second year the foundation has held the competition in which students and parents nominate a Costa Mesa teacher. The Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce invited the four finalists in the competition to its Les Miller Student Awards breakfast where the winner was announced.

The Les Miller awards recognize top students in the city.

“I felt completely honored,” Olsen said. “It truly could have been anyone because we have so many amazing teachers in this district.”

The second-grade teacher received a crystal book as the award. Her name and title as “Favorite Teacher 2014-15” are engraved on the book.

After the breakfast, Olsen said she returned to her classroom where her students asked her who won.

“Once I showed them the book, they screamed ‘We won,’” Olsen said. “I love that they count it as their win too. I always tell them that this class is their school family.”

She has taught at Woodland for 17 years. She started with a kindergarten class at the school that educates kindergarten through second grade.

“During these grades, I see students go through so much discovery and they have a joy for everything,” Olsen said. “Every day when I wake up, I say the things I’m thankful for. This job is one of them.”
