Newport Beach police arrested a man who they said was a fugitive who used the rooftops of homes near Jamboree Road and Coast Highway in an attempt to evade officers during a pursuit early Thursday.

The case started Wednesday afternoon when police approached a man on Back Bay Drive. Officers were looking for him because a relative had called the Police Department worried about his well-being, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

When police arrived, the man fled, Manzella said. Officers searched the area but left when they didn’t find him.

Shortly after midnight, police got a call that someone was on a resident’s roof, Manzella said. Police arrived at the home in the 1100 block of Dolphin Terrace and found that the suspect was the man involved in the earlier incident, Manzella said.

Officers cornered the man on the roof of another home on Dolphin Terrace, police said. He was arrested on a felony warrant, according to Manzella, who said she couldn’t say what the warrant was for.

Police identified the man as Michael Ryan Overby, 37, of Anaheim.
