Costa Mesa officers arrest alleged prowlers

Costa Mesa police said they found a woman hiding in a trash can Tuesday morning after she and a partner allegedly tried to ransack cars to support their drug habit.

Around 4 a.m. Tuesday, police got a call about a man and a woman checking for unlocked car doors in the 3000 block of Country Club Drive.

Officers arrived and detained 26-year-old Costa Mesa resident Jaron Cooper, who’d allegedly tried to dodge police when they arrived.

When officers combed the area, they found Cooper’s alleged partner about two blocks away, hiding in the trash can in the backyard of a house on Ceylon Road, police said.

The two admitted they’d been going through unlocked cars, looking for cash or other valuables so they could buy heroin, according to police.

Officers couldn’t find anything of value taken by Cooper or the woman, Alexis Davison, 22, of Sunset Beach, so they arrested Cooper on suspicion of loitering and arrested Davison on suspicion of loitering and vehicle tampering.

Police are investigating whether the two were involved in other crimes in the area. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (714) 754-5205.
