Two public meetings this month will focus on Costa Mesa’s preliminary budget for the upcoming 2014-15 fiscal year.

The first, a City Council study session, will be held at 4:30 p.m. May 13 in City Hall. The following day, an informal question-and-answer session at City Hall with city CEO Tom Hatch and interim Finance Director Steve Dunivent will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Both meetings will be recorded and available for viewing on the city’s website, https://www.costamesaca.gov.

The proposed $139.8-million budget is about $8.3 million, or 6.33%, higher than last year’s adopted budget. The council is scheduled to approve a budget June 17; the 2014-15 fiscal year begins in July.

The plan calls for a 4% salary increase for police officers, improvements to the Costa Mesa Senior Center and communication system upgrades for the police and fire departments.

“The city’s management team and staff have put together a preliminary operating and capital expenditure plan that addresses the City Council’s priorities while fulfilling the service requirements of the people who live, work and play in our community,” Hatch said in a written statement. “The City Council welcomes input from the community ... as it considers input, debates priorities and ultimately adopts a new budget.”
