OCC boosts summer offerings

In response to student need for general education classes, Orange Coast College is adding classes to its summer offerings.

Registration for the upcoming semester is open for current students. New students may apply for the summer semester and then receive their registration date.

Last year, the college offered about 200 classes to summer students. Over 300 classes will be open this summer.

Orange Coast officials said the college is making efforts to provide students, including those in high school, the courses they need to transfer to four-year institutions.

“We’re giving a better variety of classes and offering them at different times of the day,” Vice President of Instruction Kevin Ballinger said. “We want to allow students to easily move toward their educational goals.”

According to Ballinger, deadlines for registration will occur on a rolling basis until June.

The summer semester will have two start dates for students: June 15 and June 22. The later date will cater to high school graduates and other students needing accommodation.

The summer semester will give students courses that span over four-, six- and eight-week periods. In addition to day and evening classes, some courses will also be available online.
