Costa Mesa gets more funds for bike trail

Share

Costa Mesa recently acquired a $700,000 grant for a new bicycle pathway from the city’s Westside to the Santa Ana River trail.

The grant is from the state’s Active Transportation Program, created by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2013 to consolidate federal and state transportation programs.

The funds supplement a $1-million grant awarded to the city in February from the Orange County Transportation Authority’s Bicycle Corridor Improvement Program. The OCTA received its funding for the bicycle program from the federal government.

City officials said the bike path, which will be just over a mile long, will start at Placentia Avenue at West 19th Street. It will travel west along West 19th to the street’s terminus at Talbert Regional Park, go into the park along its southern border and connect with the Santa Ana River trail.

The project is expected to cost $1.85 million; Costa Mesa will pay $150,000 for design services. City staff members are working with local community groups, the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, city of Newport Beach and county government in the effort.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2016.
