Council to finalize reservoir cover deal

Share

The installation of a new floating cover at Big Canyon Reservoir is complete — again.

At its meeting Tuesday, the Newport Beach City Council will review the close-out of a $6-million contract with MPC Containment International for completion of the work.

For some, it may feel like deja vu. A $6-million cover installed in 2004 was intended to last for 20 years but began to deteriorate after less than five, prompting a lawsuit from the city and the need for a new cover.

The scope of work on the most recent contract expanded slightly to include “modifications to improve the design, maintenance and landscaping of the adjacent lot,” according to the staff report.

SAN MIGUEL PARK

The council will also consider a contract of just more than $330,000 with Big Ben Inc. to rehabilitate San Miguel Park, on San Miguel Drive.

Among other work, the modular restroom, which was built more than 25 years ago, will be replaced, according to the staff report. The picnic area near it has already been deconstructed.

The company will also construct new sidewalks, update the parking lot and install new structures to provide shade.

STREET SWEEPING AND PARKING

Council members will discuss whether to ask staff to review current parking policies related to street sweeping.

Councilwoman Nancy Gardner raised the issue at the council’s April 8 meeting.

RIVERSIDE POST OFFICE

Council members may again discuss whether to approve an architecture firm’s request to change the zoning and land-use designation of the post office on Riverside Avenue near West Coast Highway from public facility to mixed-use.

Although a mixed-use designation would allow the post office to continue at the site, such a change would open up other options for development, noted council members, who had recently received notice from the post office that its lease at 191 Riverside Ave. had not been renewed.

A spokesperson for the applicant maintained that he was not aware of any plans to change the building.

The council meets at 7 p.m. in its chambers, at 100 Civic Center Drive.
