Annual run to benefit schools

Share

Regular runners and students from across the city will line up at Jim Scott Stadium at Estancia High School on April 26 for the seventh annual Costa Mesa Community Run to raise money for schools.

Two-thirds of the proceeds will go to the Costa Mesa High School Foundation and Estancia and TeWinkle Schools Foundation, with the rest of the funds being split among the city’s other schools, said race coordinator Karen Barloon.

Phil D’Agostino, who was recently promoted to director of student services at Newport-Mesa Unified, and Barloon, who is the testing coordinator at Estancia High, came up with the idea for the run in 2008.

“It really is a community event,” Barloon said. “That’s what makes it endearing. We’re really proud that we’ve been able to raise money for our schools.”

Since its first year, the event has raised more than $70,000, Barloon said.

Runners will take off from Jim Scott Stadium and run either a 2k, 5k or 10k through Fairview Park, eventually circling back to the high school.

“It’s different than other runs because it’s a country and track run,” she said. “We have this great park that we want to showcase.”

The event begins the evening of April 25 with a car show and booths showcasing various local vendors. The Daily Pilot is one of the sponsors of the Community Run.

A pancake breakfast will be served at the high school by the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa the morning of the races. The cost is $5.

First-place runners in the 5k and 10k races will receive a $250 IKEA gift certificate. Second-place runners will take home a free pair of ASICS shoes, and third-place winners will receive a $50 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The cost to participate ranges from $25 to $35 depending on the length of the race.
