Motorcyclist injured in Newport Beach crash

A motorcyclist was seriously injured Wednesday night in Newport Beach when he and an SUV crashed near Fashion Island, police said.

The motorcycle and a Toyota 4Runner were traveling opposite directions on Coast Highway and collided when the SUV’s driver turned left at the intersection of Newport Center Drive, according to Newport police Spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

Police identified the hurt rider only as a man in his 20s who’d been on a Kawasaki motorcycle.

Emergency personnel took the motorcyclist to the trauma center at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, but police said his injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.

The driver and the two passengers in the 4Runner were not injured.

Police are investigating the crash but said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
