Costa Mesa is providing free sandbags for protection from this week’s anticipated rainstorms.

Residents can fill up to 15 sandbags for free at the Placentia fire station, 2300 Placentia Ave. Shovels will be provided.

The city will have emergency crews on standby Friday and Saturday to handle any flooding, downed trees, broken traffic lights and other issues, city officials said in a news release Tuesday.

The Fire Department will have four additional firefighters on duty Friday and Saturday.

“We don’t anticipate any major problems, but we want to be ready just in case,” city CEO Tom Hatch said in a prepared statement.

According to the National Weather Service, a small storm is expected to move over the Greater Los Angeles area by Wednesday. A second, larger storm expected Friday could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain along coastal areas.
