Comedian Jerry Lewis and Gov. Jerry Brown are among the scheduled guests for a gala Saturday in Newport Beach presented by City of Hope, a Duarte-based research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.

The event, titled Let’s Be Frank About Cancer, will honor cancer survivor Frank Di Bella and City of Hope doctor Sumanta Pal for their dedication to finding a cure for cancer.

Proceeds from the black-tie affair will support Pal’s research, which focuses on how cancers develop and metastasize and how to better predict cancer recurrence and improve treatments.

Fundraiser to aid Ben Carlson statue effort

Costa Mesa-based surfwear brand Hurley will present an auction fundraiser Saturday to support the Ben Carlson Foundation’s effort to place a memorial statue in Newport Beach to honor the late lifeguard.

Carlson died July 6 while helping a distressed swimmer caught in large surf. His death was the first on-duty fatality in the nearly 100-year history of Newport Beach lifeguards.

The auction will include photos taken by Tom Cozad of a memorial paddle-out in Newport Beach days after Carlson’s death. Local surf shots from other photographers also will be up for sale.

A raffle will offer Hurley products, GoPro cameras and other prizes.

The fundraiser will be from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hurley headquarters, 1945 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa.
