Officials still are trying to identify a body that was weighted down in the ocean off Newport Beach and eventually found floating on the surface more than a year ago.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday released a composite sketch of the man, whose body was discovered about a mile offshore on Dec. 24, 2013. The man had been dead for weeks, though it was unclear how long he had been in the water, investigators said.

“The victim may have suffered unknown head trauma and had been weighted down with a 35-pound iron dumbbell,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The man was 30 to 50 years old, about 165 pounds and about 5 feet 8 inches tall with dark hair, according to authorities.

He was wearing dark Champion nylon sweat pants with zippered legs, size 11 Asics tennis shoes and a black Timex watch, authorities said.

Sheriff’s officials asked that anyone with information about the case call (714) 647-7000 or (714) 647-7044. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) 847-6227 or occrimestoppers.org.
