Woodbridge advances to state Academic Decathlon

Woodbridge High School is among five Orange County schools that will compete in the California Academic Decathlon next month.

The team, which took second place in the Orange County Academic Decathlon, was recognized Tuesday night at an award ceremony at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

Westminster High in theHuntington Beach Union High School District took first place out of 41 teams. This year marks that first time in the competition’s 47-year history that five Orange County schools have reached the statewide competition.

The Orange County Academic Decathlon seeks to build skills that prepare students for college and career success. Teams compete in mathematics, economics, language and literature, science, music, art, social science, speech, and via an interview and essay.

The theme set by United States Academic Decathlon Assn. for the 2014-15 competition is New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation.

The statewide competition will be held March 20 and 21 in Sacramento.
