Surfer pleads guilty to felony drug charges

A former professional surfer from Newport Beach pleaded guilty Friday to three felony drug charges in Orange County Superior Court.

Christopher Polovina, 35, admitted he was in possession of heroin, methamphetamine and an anti-anxiety drug, alprazolam, when Newport Beach police arrested him Jan. 5.

He also pleaded guilty to being under the influence of a controlled substance. A misdemeanor charge for resisting arrest was dropped, according to court records.

Polovina was sentenced to three years’ probation and 270 days in jail.

The former pro surfer previously had a run-in with the law in New Jersey. A judge there sentenced Polovina to four years’ probation after he pleaded guilty in 2012 to threatening his ex-wife.
