A Tennessee man died and his 14-year-old son was seriously injured when a pickup collided with their car on Fairview Road in Costa Mesa on Wednesday night, according to police.

The two were in a 2010 Toyota Yaris when it pulled out of a grocery store driveway at about 7 p.m. and started crossing the northbound lanes of Fairview just south of Baker Street, authorities said.

A 2009 Nissan Titan truck slammed into the driver’s side of the Yaris, “causing major broadside damage to the smaller vehicle,” police said in a news release.

Emergency crews took the Yaris’ driver, Alberto Lopez, 32, of Clarksville, Tenn., to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died about an hour later from chest trauma and other injuries, authorities said.

His son, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was taken to Children’s Hospital of Orange County in serious condition with injuries including a bruised lung, according to police.

The truck’s occupants also were taken to local hospitals, authorities said. The driver, Jesus Silva-Manriquez, 18, of Costa Mesa, had pain in his left arm and neck, and his female passenger, 17, also from Costa Mesa, had pain in her right shoulder, according to police.

The names of the minors involved in the collision were not released.

Local family members will take custody of the 14-year-old, authorities said.

Police are investigating the crash, including who was at fault, and asked that anyone with information call traffic investigator Darren Wood at (714) 754-5264.
