Three teachers honored

Three teachers in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have been recognized for excellence by the California League of Schools in the Orange County region.

The organization honored Nathan Hunter, who heads the math department and coaches baseball and football at Estancia High School; Jacqueline Washington, a social studies and AVID teacher who splits time between the district office and TeWinkle Middle School; and Jeff Brinkley, who has coached football and taught at Newport Harbor High School for 29 years.

School gets $250,000 for digital media

Mariners Christian School in Costa Mesa received a $250,000 grant from the Argyros Family Foundation for a new digital media center, the private school announced Tuesday.

The 2,000-square-foot center, which will be in the school library, is expected to open for the 2015-16 school year. It will include 3-D printers, large computer screens and work spaces equipped for iPads.

“We are thrilled to receive this generous support from the Argyros Family Foundation,” interim Head of School Todd Perkins said in a statement. “This is a pivotal gift and enables us to fast-track our advancements in 21st-century learning for students.”

Literacy fundraiser

The Corona del Mar-based Literacy Project Foundation is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday.

The “Celebrity Bar Battle” starts at 6:30 p.m. at 3-Thirty-3, 333 Bayside Drive, Newport Beach.

Proceeds will benefit at-risk students learning to read.
