Costa Mesa police arrested a man on suspicion of burglary after a resident returned home to find a stranger in his Harbor Boulevard apartment.

Joshua T. Hanway, 33, of Costa Mesa was taken into custody Jan. 7 after he was found inside an apartment in Mediterranean Village, near Harbor and Fair Drive, police said.

Police said one of the apartment’s residents had come home for lunch that day and reported the stranger in the home. Police said they were able to surround the unit before the intruder could escape.

The burglar had entered the apartment through an unsecured glass door and gathered various electronic and personal items as if preparing to steal them, police said.

Hanway, who is currently on probation, was charged with burglary and is being held without bail for violating terms of his probation.

Costa Mesa police are working with county officials to determine if Hanway is linked to similar burglaries. Anyone with information is asked to call Costa Mesa detectives at (714) 754-5637.
