Kobe Bryant awaits decision on future of Newport headquarters

Share

The future of Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant’s global business headquarters in Newport Beach remains unknown after a hearing Thursday to discuss a possible extension of commercial use ended without a decision.

The roughly 1-acre industrial site at 1499 Monrovia Ave., near Banning Ranch, includes a 16,550-square-foot office building. It was rezoned in 2010 for residential use. A 10-year extension was given to the previous owner to continue the site’s commercial and office use, but that will expire Feb. 1, 2022.

Kobe Inc. recently approached the city to request another 10-year extension before embarking on an extensive plan to upgrade the 57-year-old building.

Bryant, who lives in Newport Coast, has proposed spending about $6 million on interior and exterior improvements to the two-story building, which he purchased from the city in July for $5.8 million to house his company, according to city documents. The company recently invested in a sports drink called Bodyarmor.

Hearing officer Bill Conners is expected to submit a written decision in a week.
