A motorcyclist was severely injured and his female passenger also was hurt when their bike slammed into the side of a car in Costa Mesa late Thursday morning, according to police.

The pair was headed east on Baker Street when a gray sedan turned left in front of them toward a hotel driveway near the intersection with Bear Street, according to Costa Mesa police Sgt. Bryan Wadkins.

The bike slammed into the car, crumpling the passenger-side door, police said.

Paramedics took the motorcycle’s male rider to a local trauma center with major, life-threatening injuries, Wadkins said. The female passenger also was hurt and taken to the hospital, but her injuries were less severe, according to police.

“She was walking around,” Wadkins said.

The car’s driver, the sole occupant, was not hurt, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the crash, Wadkins said. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor, he added.

Police advised around 11:30 a.m. that some lanes near the intersection of Baker and Bear streets would be shut down for two to four hours.
