Irvine police arrested a Woodbridge High School student Wednesday on suspicion of attacking a classmate with a knife, authorities said.

Officers responded to the school about 12:35 p.m. during the campus lunch break. Police said a male freshman was stabbed during an altercation that stemmed from an earlier argument in gym class over a cell phone.

Paramedics took the victim from the school nurse’s office to the trauma unit at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

The boy is in serious condition, although his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to Woodbridge Principal Christopher Krebs.

The suspect also is a male freshman at Woodbridge High, Irvine police spokeswoman Farrah Emami said. He left the campus after the attack and was found at his nearby home at about 1:10 p.m., Emami said.

Authorities did not lock down the school after the stabbing, police said, noting that the suspect was in custody before students returned to class after lunch.

“This is an isolated incident, and no additional danger is posed to students related to this incident,” Emami said in an email.

Other students witnessed the stabbing, according to a statement Krebs emailed to parents.

“We will be bringing in additional counseling support from the district, and more will be on call as needed,” he said.
