Karen Mecca, 68, wife and mother of wit and vivacity, died at her home in Corona del Mar. Mrs. Mecca was born Karen Sue Lubash in Trenton, N.J., and graduated in 1968 from what is now University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. She lived for 23 years in Redding, Conn., and moved to Corona del Mar in 2007.

Besides her husband of 35 years, Roger S. Mecca, MD, clinical professor of anesthesiology at UC Irvine, survivors include two children, Adam Bernstein of Potomac, Md., and Lindsay Mecca of Manhattan, N.Y.; a sister, Barbara Lubash of Corona del Mar; and two grandchildren, Santiago and Mia Bernstein, both of whom she especially adored.

Mrs. Mecca battled ovarian cancer with characteristic determination for a remarkable seven years and, until shortly before her death, still only needed 30 minutes to complete the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle in ink.
