Janet Shaw passed away peacefully on June 15 at home in Newport Beach surrounded by her family. Originally from Royal Oak, Michigan, she attended Albion College, became a Delta Zeta, and graduated with a degree in sociology six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943, and was stationed at Miramar in San Diego. Assigned to the Aviation Division, she taught pilots radio navigation using a link trainer. Jan was always very proud of her service as a sergeant in the Marine Corps and of her status as a World War II Veteran.

She met the love of her life, Henry (Hank) Shaw, in Pasadena after the war. They were married in 1948, and settled in Altadena. Together, they raised three children, moving to the beach in 1972. Jan was active in many organizations including PTA, Panhellenic, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Lido Isle Women’s Club, Women Marines Association, and her church. She loved to play bridge and have sailing adventures with her family. Her husband, Hank, preceded her in death in 1983. Jan is survived by her 3 children: Katie Hendren, Dick Shaw (Yvonne), and Christy McCoy (Alan); 8 grandchildren: Becky, Heidi, Garrett, Lindsay, Allison, Brian, Erik and Shannon; brother-in-law, George; and 2 nieces, Lynda and Diane.

A memorial service celebrating Janet’s life will be held on what would have been her 94th birthday, July 11, at 11 am. St. James Anglican Church of Newport Beach will be holding the service at St. Andrews Presbyterian Grace Chapel, 600 St. Andrews Rd., Newport Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation: www.angelman.org or to St. James Anglican Church Altar Guild: 3419 Via Lido, Box 3900, Newport Beach, CA 92663, www.stjamesnb.org.
