Honoring Hammett

Costa Mesa City Councilwoman Wendy Leece gives Jack R. Hammett a heartfelt hug in front of family, friends and city officials during the dedication and unveiling ceremony of the Jack R. Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa on Thursday. Leece, who was short on words at the microphone, said, "I just want to give you a hug." Hammett has been an integral part of the community but is best known for his work with schools as a Pearl Harbor survivor guest speaker and member of the Freedom Committee of Orange County. He actively served in the Navy from 1937-49 and took part in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
