Peter Tipton Gates of Newport Beach passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from a Massive Heart Attack. Pete was born in Arcadia, California to Don Gates and Mary Kenner Gates on August 3, 1945. He was the little brother to Marilyn Beshear and Don Gates. Growing up, Pete spent his summers on Balboa Island, a place that eventually became home. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Pete married the love of his life, Patty Jane Gates, in 1975. They had two beautiful daughters, Laurie Kenner Gates, now 28, and Kerrie Jane Gates, now 26. The last few years of his life were filled with a truly incredible amount of laughs and love. He was known to some as Pete, but to many others it was Tip, Pedro, Tippy, Papa Pete, and Daddy. A man with a lot of bark, but very little bite! His friends and family just couldn’t get enough of his wit and humor. Pete loved people more than anything. If he wasn’t surrounded by his coffee group at Kean Coffee, or making friends at the good ole’ Chicken Coop, he was probably having a rummer with “the boys” on his most prized possession, the Patty G. Pete’s two biggest fans were his daughters, Laurie and Kerrie. Along with the two of them, he will be dearly missed by his loving sister, Marilyn, his extended family, his many friends including the “Patty G Boat Crew,” and of course his two favorites, “Sugar” and “Sierra.” Pete is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Dayna Lynn, his brother, and his ex-wife, Patty Gates. Daddy, the love we all have for you is bigger than you could ever know.
