Fischer, Dorothy Veronica of Newport Beach died at age 92 on February 10, 2012.
She was born in New York City on November 6, 1919 to Daniel and Ruth O’Leary. She grew up in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn with her older sister Ruth. In elementary school, she won an all-city essay contest and was presented a medal by the mayor on New York City Hall steps. She worked her way through college and, in 1942, graduated from Hunter College, where she majored in English and was president of her sorority Alpha Delta Pi. Attending a tea dance for soldiers in May 1942 at the Hotel New Yorker, she met the love of her life, Russell Fischer. They married in July 1942 and she put on her signature silver cuff bracelet inscribed “Russ and Dot, One Forever” which she wore her entire life. When Russ was sent overseas, she worked for the Signal Corps.

After the war, they moved to California and son Fulton Jock was born in 1946; they settled in Newport Beach in 1950. She taught English and Chemistry at the Sisters of St. Joseph Novitiate in Orange until the sudden death of her husband in 1959. She began teaching English & Latin at Tustin High School in 1960 and went to USC over two summers to earn two Masters’ degrees in education; at USC, she was inducted into Pi Lambda Theta, the National Honor Fraternity for Women and was a member of Educare. She served as counselor in several school districts, later becoming an assistant principal and district college counselor for one.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s, she was a member of Irvine Coast Country Club. Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed world travel. After retirement, Dorothy spent one month each year traveling or cruising, often with her son Fulton Jock of Riverside, who survives her. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 16th from 3pm to 5pm at Hilgenfeld Mortuary and the Rosary will be at 7:00 pm at Our Lady Queen of Angels. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Angels on Friday, February 17th at 10:00 a.m., followed by internment at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.
