Live the Look

South Coast Plaza shoppers stepped into their wildest couture, décor and cosmetic dreams last weekend at the center's first Live the Look event, held in partnership with the Hollywood Reporter.

Presenting the best in fashion, beauty and home, the event ran Oct. 3 through Sunday at several locations throughout the plaza.

Sunday afternoon, Room & Board and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams hosted a panel discussion and meet-and-greet in South Coast Plaza Village, with "Million Dollar Decorators" star and celebrity interior decorator Kathryn Ireland fielding questions from Degen Pener and Alexandria Abramian of the Hollywood Reporter, as well as those from the audience.

Ireland offered her top three pieces of design advice: ensure that your lighting is attached to dimmers or otherwise customizable, in order to control the mood of a room; don't purchase items unless you have a specific need for them, to eliminate clutter; and use color liberally.

"I always say that red costs the same as white when it comes to paint or textiles," she said. "When you run around in grayness, you feel a bit gray."

Along with offering advice on decorating, Ireland dished on some of her celebrity clients and described some of the latest trends in celebrity homes, including moving outside services like makeup and hair salons inside the home.

She noted a crypt-style screening room for producer Robert Zemeckis, inspired by "Tales from the Crypt" and featuring blood-dripped walls and a coffin coffee table. And she suggested that homeowners are building guest residences that double as entertaining space, to keep "interlopers" from traipsing about the main home.

Ireland also recommended requesting feng shui services before completing a design, based on a bad experience involving work on a home for "Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels. When everything was finished, a feng shui consultant was brought in. The person determined that the bed was in the wrong place and the headboard had "bad energy," among other similarly negative conclusions, Ireland said.

While still working within a celebrity's requests, Ireland strives for a "comfortable and livable" aesthetic, she said.

"Frankly, there's no point in living in a museum."

Before Ireland's discussion, South Coast Plaza hosted several other events as part of Live the Look. The four-day extravaganza began Oct. 3 with a fashion show hosted by celebrity stylist George Kotsiopoulos, featuring looks by the center's most elite labels.

Friday through Sunday, MAC hosted an exhibit and large-scale public makeover session featuring its new makeup collection, a tribute to fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez. Legendary supermodels Jerry Hall, Marisa Berenson and Pat Cleveland, made famous by Lopez, are the faces of the new collection; Cleveland made a personal appearance at the South Coast Plaza event.

Friday evening, models hit the runway for a show of fall fashion by Diane von Furstenberg, DKNY and Porsche Design at AnQi by Crustacean. Common trends included minimalist silhouettes with an early-1990s edge. A standout was a DKNY black cape tunic with armhole cutouts, under which was worn a contrasting white cotton long-sleeved blouse.

Gregory Arlt of MAC and Edward Tedeschi of Sassoon Salon also discussed the latest in cosmetic and hair trends.
