Beloved mother and grandmother, Paula Earl, died at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, CA, on Friday, November 23, 2012 from respiratory failure. She was 80 years old.

Born Paula Tye Turner at St. Vincent’s hospital in Los Angeles on June 21, 1932, she was the only child of Paul and Rose Mary Turner. Her father, Paul Tye Turner, originally from Atlanta, GA, was an oil speculator and her mother, Rose (Rosalie Ruo) was a housewife. They were married in Santa Barbara and the family settled in Los Angeles where Paula graduated from Immaculate Heart High School. She attended the University of Southern California where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and graduated in 1954. While at USC, Paula met Guy Chaffee Earl III and they were married on December 20, 1952. Paula and Guy lived on a ranch in Fallbrook and spent summers on Balboa Island until they moved permanently to Newport Beach in 1969.

As a young girl Paula modeled (she was known as the “graham cracker girl”) and also worked in advertising. She later had career success as a landscaper and as a travel specialist with Sundance Travel, hosting many luxury trips to various parts of the world.

In addition to her passion for travel, Paula loved sports of all kinds, especially tennis, working on crossword puzzles, and tending to her beautiful garden. She was a member of the Trojan League of Orange County, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and held board positions with the San Diego Zoo and Sherman Gardens of Corona Del Mar.

Paula’s husband of 38 years, Guy Chaffee and her children Stephen Paul and Tracey Eleanor predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Guy Granville (Virginia), Matthew Gregory (Lori) and Mary Patricia and her grandchildren, Tyler and Jake Earl, Barron and Bridgette Campbell and Chantal Earl.
Per Paula’s wishes she will be cremated and her ashes spread at sea. There will be a private Celebration of Paula’s Life for friends and family on Sunday, December 16, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).
