WILLIAM WALTER DOOTSON
William Walter Dootson was born in Pasadena, California on May 24, 1921 to parents William and Mayme, joining his older sister Evelyn. He attended Pasadena City College and later went on to study at the Naval Postgraduate school. Bill joined the US Navy in 1942 training as a naval aviator, soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He flew PBYs with the Black Cat Squadron in the South Pacific, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and other honors. He went on to serve faithfully for 23 years until he retired with the rank of Commander.
The term “retire” is used loosely here, because Bill later went on to work for Security Pacific Bank for 15 years, before starting his own commercial property management business. When he finally had had enough of the 8-5 workday, he was able to fully immerse himself in his first loves; his family and friends, travel, and life on the water.
He married his wife of 66 years, Phyllis, in 1945. Together they raised their beautiful children, Diana and Craig. Their life together was very full; full of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, life-long friendships, roadtrips, camping, airplanes, sailboats, powerboats, the Balboa Yacht Club, travel, canine companions, cats, cocktails, and red sunsets. Bill was 90 years old when he passed away peacefully on January 25, 2012. He spent his last day surrounded by the 4 generations of his family. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Craig, daughter Diana Rose, grandchildren Crystal Madaule, Kimberly Maxam, Will Rose and great grandson William Mathieu. His life was indeed very full, and he was very loved.
Bill was buried in a private ceremony with full military honors at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
