James Alfred Cate 1918 – 2011
Jim, a fourth generation Californian, was born in Earlimart. His father was Leroy Cate and his Mother Martha Noell. The family moved to Los Angeles when Jim was very young.
At age 19 Jim graduated from UCLA’s school of business. While at UCLA Jim was a member of Lamda Chi Alpha. He played water polo and was a member of the UCLA marching band. He marched in two Rose Parades.
In 1941 he married Elaine Johnson, who died in 1973. During World War II he worked at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica. He served in the U.S Army for two years. Elaine and Jim had three sons, Terence, Tracy and Corey. The boys grew up in Mandeville Canyon, West Los Angeles. Jim was very active in the Boy Scouts of America.
In 1976 Jim and Ethel Greenwald were married on the island of Majorca in the Mediterranean. In 1978 Jim retired from NCR Corporation. Ethel and Jim enjoyed travelling all over our beautiful world and their life in Newport Beach.
Jim was a kind and loving husband and father. He leaves his wife, Ethel; his sons Tracy (Barbara) and Corey (Susan); grandsons Laramy and Creed and great granddaughter Claudia. Terrence predeceased him in 2001. Jim leaves many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Ethel’s family, Gail Uilkema, Kent Greenwald and Martha Schreiner and Ethel’s five grandchildren lovingly called him Jim Jim.
Donations in James Cate’s name may be made to The Boy Scouts of America or his beloved church St James Anglican.
Services will be held Thursday, June 30th at 2 PM at St. James Anglican Church, 3209 Via Lido, Newport Beach. Parking lot on 32nd Street.
